Philosophy and Objective of the Programme

The objectives of this programme have been;

  • To give undergraduate students firm academic foundation in the basic principles of civil engineering.
  • To introduce them to recent developments in relevant areas of Civil Engineering, and
  • To equip them to meet the challenges of professional engineering employment in Nigeria in particular and the world at large.

The philosophy behind this programme takes cognizance of the fact that for a developing country, the graduate engineer is likely to face all possible engineering problems, many outside his specialty, the programme is therefore broad based so as to give a mechanical or civil engineer for example the basic principles and methods of electrical and mechanical engineering. Thus, the emphasis in first two years of the programme is on common basics covering all departments of the Faculty of Engineering.

The programme ultimately provides would-be graduate civil engineers with basic knowledge in the fields of structures, hydraulics, soil mechanics and foundations, transportation, public health engineering and materials. Graduates of this programme can find employment in the design and construction industries including highways, government establishment, research organizations, water supply corporations, ports and harbours. Postgraduate programmes are offered in four areas of specialization namely, structures, materials and construction, water resources/public health engineering and soil mechanics and foundation.
